When I first began my reading journey, I found it incredibly difficult to discover books that didn't include spice. I didn't know where to turn or who to trust, so I created No Spice Books to be that go-to place for all of us.

Just to be clear: no spice doesn't mean these stories lack swoon, substance, or style. They may not have explicit content, but they are full of everything else we love—heartwarming romance, witty banter, emotional depth, strong friendships, and those perfect slow-burn moments that keep us turning pages until 2:00 AM!

We believe great stories don't need graphic content to be compelling or five-star worthy. No Spice Books is a community of like-minded readers—a space where we can connect, share recommendations, and celebrate clean fiction together.

The Directory

We curate and maintain a comprehensive directory of clean fiction across multiple genres. Our platform allows readers to find exactly what they are looking for—their next favorite read with everything they love and nothing they don't.

The Questions

What exactly does "No Spice" mean?
We recognize that "no spice" is a spectrum. In our directory, this range covers everything from completely clean stories (where no physical intimacy is acknowledged) to closed-door romance. In closed-door titles, there may be romantic tension or heated kissing, but the bedroom door remains firmly shut. You won't find explicit descriptions, "clothes-off" scenes, or graphic intimacy.
How do the Spice and Language scales work?

We use community-driven scales to help you find your perfect comfort level at a glance.

The Spice Scale:

  • No Spice (the Sweet Tier): Focuses entirely on the emotional connection. Physicality is limited to hand-holding, hugs, or a brief, non-descriptive kiss.
  • Kissing Only (the Swoon Tier): Features more frequent or descriptive kissing and romantic tension. The chemistry is clear, but it stays strictly to kissing.
  • Closed Door (the Tension Tier): A more mature tone that might include heated making out, innuendo, or implied intimacy that happens off the page. We only include books where the scene "fades to black" before descriptions become graphic.

The Language Scale:

  • Clean: The book contains no profanity.
  • Explicit Language: The book contains profanity or "strong" language.

We do our best to personally check every book for accuracy to keep this a trusted space. If you feel a rating is inaccurate or a book doesn't meet these standards, please flag it in your review or send me a message via the contact form so I can review it.

Can I save books for later?
Yes! By creating a free account, you can save your favorite titles, create custom reading lists, and keep track of the books you want to dive into next. It's your own personal, curated library within the directory.
Is this site only for Romance novels?
Not at all! While we love a great love story, we curate titles across every genre, including Fantasy, Mystery, and Historical Fiction. We especially love stories with a romantic subplot! If it's a compelling read and fits our content standards, it belongs in the directory.
What if I find a book on the site that isn't clean?
While we do our best to vet every title, the community is our best safeguard. If you find a book in our directory that you feel doesn't meet our "no spice" standards, please use the contact form to let us know. We review every message to keep our directory a trusted space.
Can I suggest a book for the directory?
Yes! We love discovering new titles. Use our Community Submission Form to share your favorites. Including details like tropes, page counts, and release dates helps me get your recommendations live for everyone to see as quickly as possible!
Do you work with authors?
Absolutely. We love working with authors! You can submit your own books via our submission form. If you're looking for extra visibility, we also offer Author Sponsorships to feature books prominently on our homepage. We only offer six spots each month on a first-come, first-serve basis. Use the Author Form to send me a message and secure your spot!
